Marcus Stone  RA  (1840-1921)
The Development of the Art Market in England:
Money as Muse, 1730–1900
Thomas M Bayer and John R Page

“Historical genre painter and illustrator. Son and pupil of Frank Stone. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1858 and elsewhere. Elected Associate to the Royal Academy in 1876, and became a full member to the Royal Academy in 1886. Mainly painted genre scenes set in eighteenth-century or Empire costume. The themes are usually dramatic, sentimental, or sometimes humourous. In his own day Stone’s pictures were much admired and fetched high prices. He illustrated Our Mutual Friend for Dickens and worked for Cornhill Magazine. Works by him are in many English museums.”
